Your Biggest "Secret" is in Turning Up....

With 3days left of 2009, I saw a post on Facebook by Alwyn Cosgrove that he had just completed #250 workout of the year.....

This got me thinking to how many days I have meditated this year as I've been "measuring" it.....

Well I can now tell you I hit my goal of 90% Adherence to Meditation and I'm very proud about it!!

What does 90% look like in the real world?
I meditated for 329 days out of 365
I missed 36 days of meditation which is 10% of the year!

I've written about Does Meditation Really Work? Before here
I've also written about #1 Secret of All Time here

This isn't about Meditation although if you are interested then go here this is about SHOWING UP CONSISTANTLY!!

So many secrets to your health and fat loss goals, yet people are missing a few important facts to anything in life!
  1. Secret #1 Show Up
  2. Secret #2 Show Up Consistantly i.e. 90% of the time (if 90% is too much start with 70%)
  3. Secret #3 Totality of health/Fat loss is more important then your "secret ab exercise"! So look at many different facets rather then just exercise or nutrition......
Look you don't have to be completely anal about "measuring" everything other wise you won't start, however when you are ready to move up a level then things like this matter!!

The most important "secret" you can do right now is START..... enjoy the process and journey and let it come to you by DOING!!

2010 is coming and everyone is talking about "best year ever".....rather then look at it as a best year ever, maybe look at it from a perspective of "what would my life look like if everything increased by 10% minimum!!!???

Have a awesome New Year and Talk next year!!

Speak Your Voices BUT.... Beware of Haters!!

It's always interesting when you speak your different voices i.e. the voice of hate, love, anger, compassion, right, wrong etc... what response you get back from people around you!!

I mean the more I "speak out" about what I think/believe the thicker my skin needs to be..... But here's the other side of this coin..... Alot More people are listening as well!!

So today I write from my different voices to the "haters" and the "listeners"....

Firstly, if you are a "hater" of what I've got to say, then good on you! I mean who said I'm right???

However, I challenge your thinking if I seem to p#$% you off with my rants and thoughts about how things "should be"!!

What is it that you so dislike?
Is it I speak my mind?
Do I strike a cord with your beliefs about ___?
Maybe you absolutely hate me?
Do you think I'm a egotistical male pig?

What ever your reason for being a "hater", I ask you to ask a couple of simple questions before you pass judgement on what you perceive I say........

Ask; What does he mean? E.g. Not what do I think he means, what does HE ACTUALLY mean when he says something that gets under my skin?!?

What is it REALLY about what he says that p#$%$# me off?
Am I all pi$ed off because he saying something that doesn't align with what I believe?

At the end of the day "haters", all I'm doing is speaking what I perceive to be true and yes, I do have a strong conviction when I bring it to the table but that still doesn't make me right or unable to change my thinking!!

May I suggest to you "hater"...... Always look at both sides of coin even if it is against your beliefs because to truly "get it" you need to look at EVERYTHING from a 360 degree perspective!!

To the "listeners" who enjoy what I got to say, thanks for listening BUT I ain't god and I make mistakes and have been known to be wrong many times!!

If you do have a "strong voice" about how you think, speak it but speak it with a OPEN MIND to other people's thoughts on the subject!!

Spida Hunter
P.S. Of late I have been speaking from my "take it or leave it" voice and this is why I created the video's below;

It Saddens me...

While I had lots of fun play fighting with the kids in the pool at Hamner Springs, I want to share with you 1 thing I did see that saddened me!

I saw 1 girl eat the entire time we were on the bus both going up and coming home i.e. 90mins each way!! Plus, we ate once we got to Hamner and then just before we come home! Now, I did NOT see her eat in those times.........

However, what I saw was a kid UNCONSCIOUSLY throwing food in her mouth, and I'm not talking making a pig of herself, she politely ate and when it was gone, she started on something else!!

Now, it's easy to pass judgment on her, however I looked at her and thought,
"Is she ok, because the way she is continuously eating, indicates to me she is NOT?"

Here's a 10yr old girl who has started a habit that is going to be very hard to "get to the bottom of", now and or as an adult!

Yesterday I was on my son's bus trip with about 60 kids ranging from 5-11yrs old....yes very tiring and heaps of fun!
I don't think it's fair to blame the parents either, with out knowing what's going on! Let's face it, as parents we all slip into unconscious behaviors and this is WHY I think it's so important to ask questions of yourself not just as a parent but an adult!

Question I ask of myself when parenting or living;
  • What is this really about?
If you answer this honestly, you will get passed all the bullshyt that your mind will justify to make it "ok"!

Worth pondering on........

Making our Woman Strong in Body & STONGER in Mind!

I'm a big believer in making woman "strong" when training at EHP!! My REAL mission when ever training woman is obviously get them their desired results.....

BUT it's more then that for me, if they let me, I want them to get the results they desire BUT also to have a strong(er) mind & spirit then body, I use physical training to "tap" into these other pillars of health!!

This is very important to me as a "man"....No I'm not that new age metro sexual type!! However, as a "man's man" I have the up most respect for woman that get on with it and JUST DO IT! This is the example I was shown by my mother and this is the example I have come to expect in woman!!

Just to prove to you I'm not the "new age" type.......

YOUR GENDER IS NOT THE REASON YOU CAN'T DO "IT".... IT'S BECAUSE YOU DON'T WANT TOO!!
But...... NOT!

Yes, it's a struggle for you, but the woman before you have had it harder so get over it and make the most of what you got!!!

Anyway, back to my point before I got side tracked!

Why am I sharing this with you?

Well, just yesterday I had 2 girls Kathryn & Hayley perform the dead lift for the VERY first time after 8wks of training and they both lifted above their BODY WEIGHT!!!

In fact, every female who is currently at EHP can lift their body weight in Dead lift or more!! I'm not talking the "athletic" market either, I'm talking people like you and me who work and come to see me 2-3x per week and some are in the mature age bracket!! :-)

So to all the ladies that don't use your gender as a reason "not too".... bring it on and keep lifting the tin to make your mind, body and spirit strong(er)!

To the female clients of EHP, thanks so much for allowing me to extend your barriers to lifting weights!

Spida Hunter
P.S. To the men at EHP, your a stud but you don't need me to tell ya! :-)

Get off the Internet & Get in the Trenches!

My USA buddy Zach Even-Esh has done a "killer" audio interrogation with Dan John!!

Look, I won't waste your time!

This audio talk is about REAL training that is done in real life not in the "internet" world!

If you respect hard work and are confused with all the information out there from "internet guru's", listen to this audio!

If you trained before the internet came about, listen to this audio!

Are you tired of all the bullshyt internet guru's who actually don't train people for a living, listen now!

Dan John has been training since 1966, so I think you owe it to yourself to listen to an "old schooler" of the training world & NOT the internet world!!

Go here to Zach's page to download audio Interrogation with Dan John!

Spida
P.S. I'm an "old school" dude, I believe in HARD WORK and SHOWING UP, in fact as I get 'older', I'm loving those qualities more and more and getting pi$$ed with people who don't have them! Yes, I can be grumpy "old school" guy about it, BUT I DON'T CARE!

Showing up, Hard Work & Discipline are WHAT we need more of and we have less of in reality, it does not matter for work or sport show up & be committed. If it's your family, you BEST be doing what's required for them because when it's all said and done, they matter, not some bullshyt internet forum!!

What does $20 x 38 equal????

I'm serious what does $20 x 38weeks equal?

The most common answer is going to be $760 and if you get this, you get a B+ :-)

However, I'll give you the REAL ANSWER............. A Stress FREE Christmas!
Because 38wks ago, a good friend of mine and myself put $20 a week away for our "xmas" fund and yesterday we pulled it out!

The moral of the story is not about $$, it's about do something every week and by the end of the year you have a massive investment that you can "lean" on....

And that is what your health and fitness journey should be 80% of the time, while leaving 10% for going "hard out" towards a specific competition/goal!
The world we live in today is more about rewards NOW, no one wants to do the CONSISTENT hard yards!
  • What would your life look like if you started reading an hour a day for 327 days of next year? Do you think you would be smarter?
  • What would your life/body be like if you did 3hrs of training for 48wks of the year in 2010?
    3x48 = 144hrs of training
Start thinking in terms of INVESTMENTS rather then the costs, you have to "invest" in order to get real results because anything worth achieving requires some "inve$tment"......

Things are Changing...... Are You?

It's been said by some clever person that,
"If You're Not Growing Your Dying!"

To a point I agree with this statement and like anything there is a time to "grow" and a time to "enjoy the moment"......

The real test is knowing when which
one will serve you and then use it for that time period & when it's time to let it go and progress into "grow" or "moment" thinking to apply it!!

This is the same for Strength, Nutrition, Power, Fitness, Pilates, Swissballs, Core, Fat Loss training etc.... if you are not exploring all of these avenues then what are you leaving on the table?

How much more "growth" can you get from where you are today?

This does not mean you need to be an "expert" in all areas, however a commitment to "be that" for a period of time is required for growth....not 1 day pilates & your a guru!

So here's the deal, things are changing (often too fast for us to truly get) however you need to ensure if you have a goal then you "yield" to that goal and GROW to acquire it.

Once you have achieved it, then my recommendation is to sit "in" it and be in the "moment"...... just don't forget to come out of it and then start "growing" again

Why have I posted this?

Because, I've made a commitment to post daily (M-F) to reach out to you the reader, as I've been told people enjoy my posts and I should do it more often, and this is me making it happen.....everything starts with a single step forward and this is mine.....

Please be prepared for some changes coming to this blog page i.e. New Look but the same kiwi attitude posting rants, success, health, fat loss, fitness, strength, MMA tips for you to take what you like and hopefully PUT TO USE!

Thanks for reading, Ma te wa Taniwha!

Vitamin D supplementation reduces insulin resistance?

Vitamin D supplementation reduces insulin resistance in South Asian women living in New Zealand who are insulin resistant and vitamin D deficient - a randomised, placebo-controlled trial.

von Hurst PR, Stonehouse W, Coad J.

Institute of Food, Nutrition and Human Health, Massey University, Private Bag 102 904, North Shore Mail Centre, Auckland, New Zealand.

After I found this study, I wanted to talk with Pam Von Hurst who did it to get more "details" about the study and what she found!

It's one thing to find a "science" finding but it's another thing to "get it"..... While I don't AGREE with everything she says about health/nutrition there is NO argument that Vitamin D deficiency is something that NEEDS to be addressed!!

What's your Attitude?

“The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, the education, the money, than circumstances, than failure, than successes, than what other people think or say or do.

It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company... [an organization]... a home.

The remarkable thing is we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past... we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable.

The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it. And so it is with you... we are in charge of our Attitudes.”

FREE Bottle of Fish Oil.....

Everyone seems to understand the benefits of fish oil on our health, and if you don't then let me introduce it to you!! Quite simply, if you live in the western world you NEED to supplement with Omega 3's or fish oil as it's commonly known as!!

Some facts;
Did you know that according to Charles Poliquin strength coach out of USA originally Canada, says that "fish oil has treated every disease known to man, at some stage"!!

Don't believe me, google it and find a disease that it has not treated at some stage.... I gave up after 2 pages and took his word for it!!

Now, let's just imagine for a moment that it is NOT true, let's just say it is 70% true....that's a lot of % in your favor to AT LEAST consider the benefit of it don't you think ?

If you are already a I.Q person to understanding the benefits of fish oil to you and your family's health then you need to raise that I.Q to new heights....

Here's what I'm finding in the "fish oil I.Q. community"...
Group A) Know about the benefits of Fish Oil/Omega 3's and take it but generally take the "cheap" and often "toxic" fish oils because it's "cheap" and you get a crap load of tablets for $19.95 or something like that......

Group B) This group knows very little to nothing about the benefits of fish oil and as a result do nothing..... I'm not being disrespectful when I say this, however if you don't know, you don't do!

Now, regardless of the "box" you belong too, I'm offering you an opportunity to get a FR_EE bottle of one of the Best Brands in the WORLD!! That's right not NZ or Aussie but the world!

To get this bottle of Omega 3's and to learn more of the benefits of Omega 3's all you have to do is go here. FREE bottle of Cod Liver Oil

On this page, you will have a short video of what you need to do to claim your free bottle!
Here is 7 Ways Fish Oil will improve your Health Today!
  1. Increase your I.Q
  2. Increase your "happy" gene
  3. Decrease "fat" making gene
  4. Increase cardiovascular health i.e. "good" cholesterol
  5. Decrease "bad" cholesterol
  6. Decrease joint inflammation
  7. Increase eye vision
That's 7 ways Omega 3's can impact your health and the crazy thing is, they are all "different", I mean how different can you get from eye vision to joint inflammation or decreases the "bad" fats vs increases your I.Q.... I mean how many supplements effect such a broad spectrum of health issues?

Now, if you still don't believe me then I suggest you go and "research" Omega 3's NOW!! If you do believe me and or you already take some, you are required to raise your threshold of what you know i.e. Are you taking fish oils that are safe?

Go here now to see the best we have to offer in NZ and AU hands down & I don't say this to "sell" to you, I do this because that's in my heart!!

For those who are "doer's" and want to further increase your health in your life, all you need to do is go here

Thanks for reading and being part of the EHP Kiwi Down Under Tribe!

Do NOT LISTEN to me, I'm watering down the Fitness Industry!!!

Here is a conversation with a Trainer who thinks I'm full of shit, it's unedited & happened yesterday......Why am I posting this?? Because in life, you will meet people that NO MATTER what you do, they will NEVER BE HAPPY with you!! All you can do, is be polite (as hard as it is) and move on with compassion. (Or something like that because my immature ego would like to ....... :-)

What's up Spida? I Google'd a few folks I saw on Alwyn's wall to see what peoples backgrounds were in. I was going to watch some of your clips I came I saw online but then I came across a bio that lists your credentials as someone "who has a certificate in sports studies and a diploma in personal training."

I had never heard of either of these. Usually a diploma is from a university and a certificate is from some type of organization of your choice. Maybe they were just reversed in your bio or maybe you are from another country with different terminology? If so I was curious what this may be similar to here in the US?

Thanks Hunter,

Jarrod

Spida Hunter October 28 at 10:22am
I come from New Zealand which has got different credentials then the states (if you are from there). However, I have learnt from Paul Chek, Alwyn Cosgrove, Mike Boyle, Charles Poliquin, Carlos Santana to name just a few..... Most of my learning has come from working my ass off brother and NO amount of letters behind my name can make up to that, hence why I don't associate my letters with my ego. I know how good I am and my weaknesses and I work on both as a human being first and then a family man 2nd.... A coach is a by product of these 2 things because that's what I choose!!

Hope you are well and always continue to learn and grow brother, it will make you a better person and then of course a better coach/athlete!!

Thanks for clarifying. I just like to know who else is out there giving the correct advice so that I have people to keep in contact with or debate new ideas with. It's so hard for the general population to know who the real experts are it gets frustrating seeing all these so called experts online, haha!

A lot of time I truly believe even a so called experts believes they are a true expert while saying they learned (or "learnt") some training tips from some of the best guys out there. They don't realize there is this whole other world of education they don't even know about....kind of like "ignorance is bliss."

I believe to be a true expert one must "work his ass off" but also have a formal education to back up one's experiences. Learning the "tricks" of the trade from the guys you mentioned is nothing compared to learning the whole trade inside and out.

I understand most trainers take a lot of shortcuts and I don't expect everyone to take experience along with education as serious as I do. Knowing how good one thinks he is and what weaknesses one has does not make him a sound trainer. I believe one owes more than that to his clients.

Along with a lifetime of experience in sport and exercise one should be serious enough to back up his words with a good foundation in the true science of exercise physiology, biomechanics, motor learning, motor development, physics, chemistry, logic and rhetoric, critical thinking, etc...

I am not talking about going to a couple of talks per year or getting some type of certification...I am talking years of study gaining knowledge that can't be met with "tips" and "anecdotes" at conferences or workshops...without this background one remains at the stage where he doesn't even realize what he doesn't know. I find it's usually the people without any letters after their name that say the letters don't matter.

Good luck doing what you do!

Bro, you proceed to insult me with what you think! What is the point of emailing me. You sound like someone who is 21yrs of age with a "idealism" for the fitness industry which is great BUT like me you will have to find it in you to FIT "idealism" with personal reality. I have everything you "care" about but because I don't articulate it in a way that you can comprehend and you box me up into little segments of "right" and "wrong" in your eyes...

You believe I owe more to my clients, how can you tell this through FB or by 1 short email, have you had the honor of discussing my coaching services with them and the impact good or bad I have had on them? I think not, yet you care to tell me what you think and insult me......

This is the problem with the internet, people make reprepsentations of how they interpret information and if they "can't get it" they JUDGE the person in a way that's often not fair or real!!

So before you insult me with your "idealism" of the world, check your own backyard to see if you live transparently across the board of how you talk with me!

Jarrod Parra October 28 at 12:52pm Report
I suspected your lack of commitment to my field from your post. I thought my original email to you was a legitimate question to someone who claims to be someone to listen to.

Your first email solidified my suspicion when you didn't answer my question to you regarding your education. I find it insulting that you see no importance in one having "letters after their name"...as this somehow negates their lifetime of their real world or applied sport and exercise background, just because they have become that much more knowledgeable through a formal education. It's people like you who water down my field...if you put yourself out there to the public you have to be willing to have your transparency shown...and yes I can tell from one article, one post or simply how someone reacts to criticism as to where they are at in my field.

I have also had athletes and previous clients who didn't realize that their previous trainer wasn't any good even if they were injured by that trainer or were a great athlete to begin with and it didn't matter who they worked with. Just because you have clients that like you or have trained some athletes who have had some or a lot of success doesn't mean you know what you are doing.

Sometimes no matter how hard you unknowingly use faulty training practices some athletes will excel in spite of this...it is later in life when they will most likely feel the ill effects of your methods. It's great that you know your weaknesses, I'll give you that.

More than that though is what I mean when I say you don't even know what you don't know...that's where it gets scary.

First off, my lack of committment, if you think you can see through a crystal ball and see how I do things then your name is God not Jarrod. Who said I'm someone to listen too, if that's what people want to do then great if not that's okay too!

What you mean is I didn't answer your question to HOW you wanted me to answer it with qualifications that justify my existence in the industry even though being from NZ they won't mean much to you. I also said I don't associate my ego with letters behind my name which is different to your interpretation of what you think I said by stating "importance in one having letters after their name"!

Jarrod, I personally think that you think you are God, as you have the arrogance to go with it, thanks for making judgement of me as it spells out exactly the person you are.

When you post things and have radio interviews online available for folks to see that means you think you are someone to listen too...or at least you feel like people should learn from you. I know plenty of trainers from other country's so if you would have given your credentials I would have recognized them. It was a simple question. Nothing to do with ego. It just gives me an insight to where a fellow "trainer" is coming from.

You are right, I have already judged you and find no reason to take you seriously. Just be glad that the general population will buy into just about anything that anyone that calls themselves a "trainer" tells them to believe. It's just too bad others like you will keep watering down my field.

It's not "idealism" that I think trainers need to be more responsible and educated, it's just a standard I think our clients deserve.

Sure thing God

For those that have read the lot of this and for those believe you NEED letters behind your name before you are "any good", I have a Diploma In Personal Training. The Diploma did NOT make me any good, in fact it was easy, the years after my studies has provided the "real" learning on top of the theory I got in school!!

I mean personally for me you RIP those that you love or have had such a direct impact on your life through "things" they have taught you etc.....

So today I RIP my dad, Perry William Hunter who died at the young age of 37 and left behind Danny, Kylie, me and Vannessa.

While you are an asshole, (literally he was and for leaving us :-). Love you and miss you lots, thankyou for looking after all of us since you have gone, keep it up and have a drink with MJ and Patrick will ya! ;-)

To those of you that have lost your dads at a young age (literally or through them not beeing there) and you have had to figure shit out on your own, keep the faith brothers and always do your best with what you got and make sure you keep adding to your perception of what you think your "best" is!!

My defination of a Real Man is progressive, so my only advice I can give to you that works for me is;

Know where your own shit comes from! This will save you more drama then you need (i.e. kids, missus, people) and allow you to figure it out without being too attached to the outcome! I've been learning this the hard way and I still get hard lessons from it today :-)

To the mums who have had to pick up the peices either from dads walking out on you and the kids or through death. Keep the faith and thanks mum, you have had the hardest lot of shit to make sense of, out of all of us!!

Protein Powders...too much confusion.....

In the fitness industry we seem to always have 2 ends to the spectrum on many different topics and Supplements (in this case Whey Protein) is defiantly one that causes many debates, blinded myths and followings at both ends of the spectrum of "good" for you or "bad" for you!!

Today I wanted to share with you Why I think Protein Powder is useful in your;
  • Fat loss
  • Fitness
  • Recovery
  • Nutrition
  • Strength,
  • Muscle Building
  • Sports Performance Goals....
  • YES, Protein Powder cover that much when "supplementing" with "common sense"!!
Here's the Top 5 Reasons, I get clients to take Whey Protein Powder;
  1. Aids in immediate Recovery to the muscles when taking directly after training! If your goal is to have less body fat then have it with H20, if your goal is more muscle mass have it with Gatorade or orange juice (carbs).
  2. Meal Replacement: This means, if part of your nutrition plan is to have 4-6 meals per day to help with body fat reduction, energy, recovery, stabilizing blood sugar levels etc... whey protein powder is a great SUPPLEMENTATION for 1 of your meals!!
  3. Proteins are organic molecules made up of amino acids – the building blocks of life!
  4. Our bodies need proteins and amino acids to produce important molecules in our body – like enzymes, hormones, neurotransmitters, and antibodies – without an adequate protein intake, our bodies can’t function optimally!
  5. Great Easy Option: This is often taken to the extreme with men and they live on Whey Protein Powders 4x or more a day and call it a balanced "meal"! Yeah right, look it's a great alternative when you are in a "jam" for time or lazy, however don't fool yourself to say it's gods answer to 6 pack abs my male friends!!
Alot of health guru's want to argue that there are better forms of protein or the "real" vs "non real" of food etc.....

I'm not going to here, accept I'm going to say when used with "common sense" it's benefits out weigh any debate!

Okay, so how much do you need?

Again this causes more debate then it needs to! No 2 people are the same and figuring out this equation is too complicated for entry level person that is embarking on a new health and fitness journey!;
i.e. 0.8 grams per kilogram (or around 0.36 g per pound) of body mass in untrained, generally healthy adults!

I'm not saying that the above equation is "wrong", I'm simply saying that we are jumping the gun for 90% of the population trying to achieve their goals, sure these equations and statistical data to back up these claims sure make you buy into this concept by confusing you and making you think they must know because it's been "researched" & you are confused!! If you are confused, it means it too complicated and YOU WON'T adhere to it long term!!

If you are a beginner my recommendation to clients;
Men
90kg or less 1 -1.5 scoops for a meal replacement
90kg + 1.5 - 2 scoops for meal replacement
Females
90kg or less 1 scoop
90kg + 1 - 1.5scoops

Of course this is a guideline but it's a guide line you can do NOW with out having to study math for 3days to get the "right" protein portion that changes once you add physical activity into the equation!!!
Start with this and over time you'll play with what's right for you from actual experience rather then from an intellectual stand point!

So What Whey Protein Powder should I use?
Again, the debate of "the best"???.....blah blah blah......

According to Charles Poliquin there is 3 places you can source RAW protein powder and NZ is one of them!!! That's right, so 90% of the protein powder market purchase from us, dress it up and then sell it back to us!

General rule of thumb (but not always)!: If it's cheap it's generally got lots of cheap quality protein source powder & fillers to hide the cheap product i.e. powder is graded 1-5.

1 = animal consumption, 5 = human consumption and 3 is Animal AND Human consumption i.e Grade 3 is used in protein powders around the world because it's cheaper then 5 but still "allowed" through FDA etc....!!

I personally think Rice based Protein powder is what is BEST FOR ME (or similar to rice based) but that's because they are good on my gut and don't leave me bloated etc.... however most people aren't prepared to pay the extra cost and would rather walk around bloated and gassy.....poooo stink!

However because I "change" things up occassionally when I do go back to Whey Based Protein Powder I use Ultimate Whey (100% Export Quality Whey Concentrate), I have found this protein powder to mix well i.e. no lumps when shaking with water only and taste great i.e. no artifical sweetners!

Humes Strong(er) Together Competition....AWESOME!!

On Friday we held the first ever Humes Strong(er) together Competition. To give you a bit of back ground I've been training Humes Pipeline Company on site for 6months with little more then Body weight and now they have graduated to Kettlebells!

Here's a video of them after 3months

Anyway, the objective of this day was to "work together/team building" in a Strongman type event.

To achieve this we put them in 2 teams (Team Mean & Team Meaner) 6 per team and they competed together.

They got points for;
  • Winning the event = 10points
  • Vocal Support of other team members = 1-10 points (verbalizing their encouragement i.e. yelling)
  • Physical support of team members = 1-10 points (helping team members with tasks to make it easier but not cheat)
The Strong(er) events where in order of completing them;
  • Farmers Walks = They have what's called Formers which are circular type steal plates that go from 25kg to a TON! We used 75kg for the big boys and 65kg for the smaller lads! Now let me tell you, the weight is not alot BUT the size of the "rings" are big and extremely awkward to carry!!

Everyone gave it a nudge (couple put them in wheel barrows) & to my surprise everyone got them across the line & back.........just (I say suprise because I carried them & thought Holy shiz, I don't think I can carry it!!!!) Special mention must go to David who was the smallest guy and smashed everyone on time and ease.....very impressive!! Win to Team Meaner!

  • Sled Pulls = 20m Rope with 65kg of weight on a sled, pull that sucker as quickly as possible across the concrete then next team member did the exact same, until all team members had finished!! Team Mean had a shocka they only had 5 guys do it out of 6! So they "won" but we called it a draw!

  • Wheel Barrow Races = Wheel barrow to each team, they started with two 40kg cement bags in wheel barrow, they raced a zig zag course & picked up another 40kg cement bag at one end to repeat the zig zag coming home where they handed over to the next person in team to repeat the process!

This was a funny event to watch & referee, they said this was the hardest due to fitness!! Broken cement bags everywhere with people taking the pi$ out of each other, it was fun and everyone was buggered afterwards!! Win to Team Mean

  • Lastly was good old fashioned TUG OF WAR!!
Best out of 3......First one went to team Mean....then the smack talk started........2nd one went to Team Meaner.........then the smack talk got more........and it was all on for the 3rd and final tug of war...........go.........10sec team mean looked to have it in sync and in the bag.....15sec.....team meaner pull it back to the middle......20sec it's STILL EVEN......25sec.....team meaner start wearing down team mean.....30sec.....TIME! Win goes to Team Meaner.....was awesome the first 2 tug of wars where over in about 10sec due to team dominating the other....this 3rd and final was fitting to the day! 30sec of Tug of War and it was JUST won by Team Meaner!!
Final Points of the day taking into consideration of all factors? And the winner goes to...........................a DRAW with 110 each!!

The boys weren't happy about this they wanted a WINNER! So we did it the old fashioned way........choose 1 person from each team and sculling race! Ian bought it home for
Team Mean!

I have to say, I had a great time and so did the Humes Crew they are looking forward to the next one so they Team Meaner can get their revenge! For now though, Team Mean can bath in the feeling of success.......

Thanks to all of Humes Christchurch from Management to all the boys on the floor in having an open mind to "making it happen", it's not your 'normal' team building exercise BUT it's team building neither the less that suits these lads!!

I tried to video it but as it happens didn't work out....so sorry I don't have any footage of this in film or photo format because a picture captures a thousand words!

Here are a couple of pics of previous training sessions;

First EVER Strongman Competition...

I completed my First Strongman Competition and here are the results for that comp!

First, I have to say I enjoy the Strongman Medley (which I won) and I suck at RAW strength i.e. Log Press! However, regardless it's very clear that my weakness is "raw strength", yet my capacity to TRANSFER the "raw strength" I CURRENTLY have is exceptional!

Before you put me in the category of blow ass, look at the facts I provide below, got nothing to do with my ego and how great I am, more an observation of others raw strength vs my raw strength, and my functional strength vs others functional strength.....now if you follow that, lets look at facts!

Facts:

  • I've been training for marathon this year which I completed on May 31st i.e. Strength training was limited to hardly any!
  • I've been training strongman for about 4wks prior to this event
  • 2 guys are strength/power lifters, 1 guy works construction everyday
  • The smallest guy in our division 81kg (I reckon the scales where heavy 2kg) after the competition was FINISHED, attempted to lift the 126kg stone and GOT IT!!! That's huge pound for pound, yet in the log press sucked like me!
Which brings me back to "use able" or being able to transfer the "raw strength" you have into what you are trying to achieve, what I'm trying to say; just because you are gym strong doesn't make you real life strong, sure you have a platform for Real Life Strength but it doesn't give you automatic rights!!

Click on results chart to make it bigger

Here's the video of the Medley;

Thanks to Eastside Strongman for organizing this event, it was a nice low key entry and fun as well (mostly). No matter where you go in life or what you do, you will always encounter Man and his EGO....the only thing that can change from that is HOW you deal with other people and there ego......I'm still maturing on that one :-)
