Client Success - Fat Loss, MMA, BMX & LIFE!!

I would like to talk about some of the success we have had at EHP with some of our EHP Tribal Clients.

********************
Cam Steer - Victory

********************
Won his MMA Fight at Fight Sports Night on Saturday March 13th 2010 via rear naked choke in 1st round.
********************
Phil Looney - Bugger
********************
Lost on the same card in a Thai fight on points decision, I've heard it was a real close fight!! Next time Phil, we'll close the deal :-)

********************
Jay Hepi - 13kg!!
********************
Has lost a total of 13kg since starting, we have hit a plateau at the moment however with regionals in Kapa Haka coming up, I'm sure that will be breaking through it!!

***************************
Shannon Alexander
-
Smashes PB
in Dead lift by 15kg

********************
Shannon is the 4th female I've coached to dead lift 100kg, this is an awesome achievement since last year was her first year training EHP Style for BMX Strength & Conditioning!! Oh, she's only 14 & weighs 58kg!!!! I know, real cool!!!

See, females should lift heavy! :-)

********************
Kate Alford -
109km??

********************
Is competing in her first 109km bike race next week, so this will be interesting to hear how she goes in this journey, I'm sure she will make it look as easy as her 100kg dead lifts for reps!! :-)

****************
Denise
-
New Dress
Size

****************
She has lost 5cm in 5wks ___________________ (the line represents 5cm) around her waist, that's 1cm a week!!

Here's how it looks for Denise in 5wks to get this awesome result with MORE TO COME!!
  • Train 4x per week = 2 Metabolic Strength & 2 Metabolic Conditioning
  • Record her Food
  • Eat According to the 9 Habits of Fat loss
  • Be Positive
  1. She has missed 3 sessions over 5wks!!
  2. Her eating is around 70% across 5wks compliant, we aim for 90%!
  3. She's honest about what she eats & not ashamed of it i.e. Positive!
  4. She's not afraid of "hard work"!
  5. We've dramatically increased her Lean Body Mass i.e. Muscle! So her weight is the same BUT her clothes are a lot looser i.e. she's getting ready for new dress size :-)
******************
Conclusion
******************
To finish, I've posted the stuff we can "measure" the stuff you can't measure as well is confidence, life performance, belief systems, mindset, attitude etc... and these things mean more to me because these "life skills" are what determine your character as a human being and the impact you will have on others!

Thanks for reading have a great day and Kia Kaha = Be Strong....... In your training and in life EHP Tribe/Whanau!

Lastly, 3 EHP Clients are also completing the City 2 Surf this Sunday. Cam, Jack, Chris & Me (running with a pram). This is the first time we have put a EHP Tribal Team in the City 2 Surf, so looking forward to more!!

Day 6: Detox = Change Your Picture!

So many people have their "own representations" of WHAT a Detox is... Hell, I know I did!!

Here's what Wikipedia had;
Body cleansing or detoxification is a treatment in alternative medicine which proponents claim rid the body of accumulated harmful substances that exert a negative effect on individual health.[1] Many scientists argue that such cleansings are often unnecessary, and are based on questionable or disproved scientific claims.

I believe the above is partly true!! I also believe before I started on this journey that people do detox's for the wrong reasons i.e. weight loss only! Sure, depending on what detox you do this is opportunity to make this happen!!

But, what I think people truly miss out on, is the opportunity to "change their ways" or habits. I mean what's the point of doing a detox then getting straight back into the way you WERE?!?!

This truly doesn't make sense to me......

This is why, my mindset has always been to "explore me" and give my internal system a break from the stresses we impose upon our system, it had NOTHING to do with weight loss!

I think if you are coming from a perspective of weight loss then you will be on a yoyo diet train all your life, jumping from one "secret diet" to the next AND you will hate every single one and your body will be a representation of that as well, big to small to big to small etc....

As Day 6 is done and dusted, it's real interesting this whole "detox" thing.
Detox or Fasting is a form of cleansing "internally" and a opportunity to "explore" you! If you can look at it from this perspective then you can make real life long changes!!

I'm no expert at this stuff, but what I do know is that from the perspective of "exploration of me" I have found a new depth to health, mentally, physically & spiritually!

I hope this helps shift your perspective on diets, exercise, detox and the simply fact that all of them are a JOURNEY not a destination!!

Day 5 of Detox - Being at "Peace"....

Day 5 is done & dusted......

I have to admit, I struggled in the first 1/2 of the day with some of my mind talk, I think there were a couple of reasons for this;

  1. I didn't eat my juiced dinner the night before
    I was real comfortable with not eating, I didn't feel there was a "need" to eat it!

  2. I woke up & got up at 5am (on a Sunday), in my sleep I broke my headphones!
    This annoyed me most of the morning, I do my meditation through Holosync which a CD based meditation with headphones ON!! So to have broken a $150 headset is a bit of a piss off!
There is learning in both scenario's that I've explored as well i.e. 1) Put my mind under a bit more stress just as I thought I had "got it". 2) Maybe it's time I explore both Holosync and other Meditation forms.

Regardless of the above, OVERALL I'm at peace with everything, I've mentioned this in day 3! Here's what I put on Face Book yesterday;

"Now tat Ive accepted hunger, I now GET how u can be @ peace with hunger! Who would of thought Maori boy from Putaruru would figure that Jedi shit out!"

It's the strangest feeling, I mean sure I have to check myself to not look to the future of Day 8 and "wanting" something when I'm there!
I've read lots of books about "being in the moment" (Dan Millman The way of the Peaceful Warrior, Eckart Tolle The Power of Now & A New Earth are 3 of my favorites) and I've got it through Meditation at times, however it seems to be with me throughout this Detox/Fasting Journey...... Funny, because knowing something intellectually is NEVER the same as knowing it "EXPERIENTIALLY"

E.g People have said to me, I could run a marathon if I trained for it!
I'm sure you can but knowing that you could if you wanted too, to actually DOING it is a whole different level of "knowing"!!

I will do my best to explain what I'm saying about being in the moment;
In the past I have just ate without little regards how much or what (to a point)!!

Now, I'm enjoying every gulp of my juice or every spoonful of my brown rice with raw veggies! While I'm in this state, nothing is a problem, I'm at PEACE with myself & the world!!

It's the best feeling to enjoy the simplest things!!!

Hopefully you get what I'm saying intellectually & if you have been their (really been there) then you know exactly what I mean!!

**********************
More Contemplating....

**********************
Well that's some of what I've been contemplating and become so much aware of! I'm also going to explore a greater depth of how much meat we eat in modern day society.

I mean back in the cave man days as I think it is...... I doubt very much that eating meat every night was in their diet, I'm pretty sure they would of rotated their protein sources (not consciously) but due to seasons, hunting etc......

E.g. They may of had birds 1 night and fish the next then nothing for 3 days, other then plant protein while they hunted a T Rex or something!

So from what I perceive the cave man days to be, it makes sense in modern day society we consume meat/dairy way too much?! I won't get into the organic meat argument today.

So this is why, I think it's worth exploring this! More so now that I have had no meat the last 5days and I have had greater depth of sleep, greater concentration, less flatulence and smell! (Side Note: I don't think no meat is the only reason my sleep or concentration has improved, being at peace has a greater impact then meat I believe!)
**************
In Closing...

**************

This is what the Detox is all about for me to EXPLORE me and my perceptions of what I thought or currently think, sure I'm down 4kg but it's not like I was obese or unhealthy prior to embarking upon this journey!

I'm so grateful to have had and taken the opportunity to "detox/fasting & explore" me, without doing this I would still believe/think the same stuff without any regard to something deeper!

Take care and have a great day!

Spida Hunter

P.S. The ULTIMATE proof of knowing someone is at "peace", is check their home life!!! And here's what my lovely lady has got to say in response to my Face book comment above;
Babe you ares doing really really well on your detox its day five and your still of sane mind!!

Fuck if it was me i would have eaten my own fucken arm by now!!... and probably try to hide it!! xoxox :-) proud of ya

Day 2 of Detox- I think I've cracked it!!!

As day 2 comes to an end of my 7 Day Detox, I think I've gone through the "toughest" part of this Detox!!

Weight this morning
90.5kg from 91.2kg the day before! <800grams.

Yesterday, was tough! I had so much "mind talk" about wanting to quit and how hard I wanted to quit & I had so many justifications for it as well!!

First thing today, was
NO different!! I went to Yoga and had the same "mind talk" going on in my head and 1/2 way through I was thinking this is "too hard" AGAIN!!!!

Yoga turned out to be the
"turning point" for me, after it I showered up and met with my lovely lady and daughter, I was still rough at this point, however an hour later when having my "main meal" at 2:30pm I thought, I've done it!!!

This is the "turning point" and I quietly ate my lunch with no "mind talk" to combat with!! I was at "peace"!!!

So I'm hoping Day 1 and 1/2 of Day 2 were my "hardest days"....... I'm hoping :-)

What my day looked like:

  • 7am: Drink Lemon/Ginger
  • 7:15am Wheat Grass drink
  • 8am Veggie Juice
  • 8:30am to 1pm MIND TALK Galore!!!
  • 10am Yoga
  • 11:45am Green Tea
  • 1pm Meditation
  • 2:30pm Main Meal = Brown Rice, steamed veggies & raw veggies
  • 5:30pm Veggie Juice = Carrot and Apple
  • 7:30pm Veggie Juice
  • 9pm Wheat Grass & H20
  • 9:20pm Peppermint Tea
I didn't do BJJ tonight, I wanted to keep my "good feel" that I discoverd during lunch and I didn't want to tax my energy levels that I had just got back!!

So Day 2 is now done and I think I'm "over the hill" with so much crap filtering through my head and my low energy levels!!!

Some Explanations:

Energy Levels:
They are a bit low due to the drop in calories, I haven't done the math on how many calories I'm consuming however I would guess that it's 1/2 of what I normally consume

Mind Talk in my Head: This is interelated with the above, when ever you go "cold turkey" your body goes through some form of 'withdrawls' & mine is having less calories......

Part of my "belief system" is
I DON'T GO HUNGRY!! It's part of Maori Culture to have food regardless of occasion i.e. death, happiness etc... So to be hungry is a real challenge to me!! If I've wanted to get leaner I eat more veggies/protein and less carbs BUT I don't go hungry (or real hungry)! So this is/was my biggest challenge to date, shifting my perception around this......

What's installed for me tommorrow?

I have no idea but I'm starting to actaully enjoy it now...... right I'm off for my peppermint tea :-)

City to Surf.... Let's Do it!!

It's time again to "look ahead" and see what's on the calendar for things to "tick off" this year! And, I've found a couple for those that are keen to join me!!

City to Surf 12km
Sunday 21st March 2010

SBS 1/2 Marathon 30th Anniversary
Sunday June 6th 2010

I'm going to organize people for these events so mark your calendar and let's make it happen!

The city to surf is a great "lead up" to the 1/2 marathon...........Look I know you think it's 22km is a "killer" but let's put it in perspective!

If you HAD TOO (i.e. I had a gun to your head) you could walk 22km RIGHT NOW!! The reality is you don't want too!

Don't let the number of 22km or 12km play tricks on you, it's JUST A NUMBER!!

Start pondering the thought of making it happen......

Speak Your Voices BUT.... Beware of Haters!!

It's always interesting when you speak your different voices i.e. the voice of hate, love, anger, compassion, right, wrong etc... what response you get back from people around you!!

I mean the more I "speak out" about what I think/believe the thicker my skin needs to be..... But here's the other side of this coin..... Alot More people are listening as well!!

So today I write from my different voices to the "haters" and the "listeners"....

Firstly, if you are a "hater" of what I've got to say, then good on you! I mean who said I'm right???

However, I challenge your thinking if I seem to p#$% you off with my rants and thoughts about how things "should be"!!

What is it that you so dislike?
Is it I speak my mind?
Do I strike a cord with your beliefs about ___?
Maybe you absolutely hate me?
Do you think I'm a egotistical male pig?

What ever your reason for being a "hater", I ask you to ask a couple of simple questions before you pass judgement on what you perceive I say........

Ask; What does he mean? E.g. Not what do I think he means, what does HE ACTUALLY mean when he says something that gets under my skin?!?

What is it REALLY about what he says that p#$%$# me off?
Am I all pi$ed off because he saying something that doesn't align with what I believe?

At the end of the day "haters", all I'm doing is speaking what I perceive to be true and yes, I do have a strong conviction when I bring it to the table but that still doesn't make me right or unable to change my thinking!!

May I suggest to you "hater"...... Always look at both sides of coin even if it is against your beliefs because to truly "get it" you need to look at EVERYTHING from a 360 degree perspective!!

To the "listeners" who enjoy what I got to say, thanks for listening BUT I ain't god and I make mistakes and have been known to be wrong many times!!

If you do have a "strong voice" about how you think, speak it but speak it with a OPEN MIND to other people's thoughts on the subject!!

Spida Hunter
P.S. Of late I have been speaking from my "take it or leave it" voice and this is why I created the video's below;

Protein Powders...too much confusion.....

In the fitness industry we seem to always have 2 ends to the spectrum on many different topics and Supplements (in this case Whey Protein) is defiantly one that causes many debates, blinded myths and followings at both ends of the spectrum of "good" for you or "bad" for you!!

Today I wanted to share with you Why I think Protein Powder is useful in your;
  • Fat loss
  • Fitness
  • Recovery
  • Nutrition
  • Strength,
  • Muscle Building
  • Sports Performance Goals....
  • YES, Protein Powder cover that much when "supplementing" with "common sense"!!
Here's the Top 5 Reasons, I get clients to take Whey Protein Powder;
  1. Aids in immediate Recovery to the muscles when taking directly after training! If your goal is to have less body fat then have it with H20, if your goal is more muscle mass have it with Gatorade or orange juice (carbs).
  2. Meal Replacement: This means, if part of your nutrition plan is to have 4-6 meals per day to help with body fat reduction, energy, recovery, stabilizing blood sugar levels etc... whey protein powder is a great SUPPLEMENTATION for 1 of your meals!!
  3. Proteins are organic molecules made up of amino acids – the building blocks of life!
  4. Our bodies need proteins and amino acids to produce important molecules in our body – like enzymes, hormones, neurotransmitters, and antibodies – without an adequate protein intake, our bodies can’t function optimally!
  5. Great Easy Option: This is often taken to the extreme with men and they live on Whey Protein Powders 4x or more a day and call it a balanced "meal"! Yeah right, look it's a great alternative when you are in a "jam" for time or lazy, however don't fool yourself to say it's gods answer to 6 pack abs my male friends!!
Alot of health guru's want to argue that there are better forms of protein or the "real" vs "non real" of food etc.....

I'm not going to here, accept I'm going to say when used with "common sense" it's benefits out weigh any debate!

Okay, so how much do you need?

Again this causes more debate then it needs to! No 2 people are the same and figuring out this equation is too complicated for entry level person that is embarking on a new health and fitness journey!;
i.e. 0.8 grams per kilogram (or around 0.36 g per pound) of body mass in untrained, generally healthy adults!

I'm not saying that the above equation is "wrong", I'm simply saying that we are jumping the gun for 90% of the population trying to achieve their goals, sure these equations and statistical data to back up these claims sure make you buy into this concept by confusing you and making you think they must know because it's been "researched" & you are confused!! If you are confused, it means it too complicated and YOU WON'T adhere to it long term!!

If you are a beginner my recommendation to clients;
Men
90kg or less 1 -1.5 scoops for a meal replacement
90kg + 1.5 - 2 scoops for meal replacement
Females
90kg or less 1 scoop
90kg + 1 - 1.5scoops

Of course this is a guideline but it's a guide line you can do NOW with out having to study math for 3days to get the "right" protein portion that changes once you add physical activity into the equation!!!
Start with this and over time you'll play with what's right for you from actual experience rather then from an intellectual stand point!

So What Whey Protein Powder should I use?
Again, the debate of "the best"???.....blah blah blah......

According to Charles Poliquin there is 3 places you can source RAW protein powder and NZ is one of them!!! That's right, so 90% of the protein powder market purchase from us, dress it up and then sell it back to us!

General rule of thumb (but not always)!: If it's cheap it's generally got lots of cheap quality protein source powder & fillers to hide the cheap product i.e. powder is graded 1-5.

1 = animal consumption, 5 = human consumption and 3 is Animal AND Human consumption i.e Grade 3 is used in protein powders around the world because it's cheaper then 5 but still "allowed" through FDA etc....!!

I personally think Rice based Protein powder is what is BEST FOR ME (or similar to rice based) but that's because they are good on my gut and don't leave me bloated etc.... however most people aren't prepared to pay the extra cost and would rather walk around bloated and gassy.....poooo stink!

However because I "change" things up occassionally when I do go back to Whey Based Protein Powder I use Ultimate Whey (100% Export Quality Whey Concentrate), I have found this protein powder to mix well i.e. no lumps when shaking with water only and taste great i.e. no artifical sweetners!

Humes Strong(er) Together Competition....AWESOME!!

On Friday we held the first ever Humes Strong(er) together Competition. To give you a bit of back ground I've been training Humes Pipeline Company on site for 6months with little more then Body weight and now they have graduated to Kettlebells!

Here's a video of them after 3months

Anyway, the objective of this day was to "work together/team building" in a Strongman type event.

To achieve this we put them in 2 teams (Team Mean & Team Meaner) 6 per team and they competed together.

They got points for;
  • Winning the event = 10points
  • Vocal Support of other team members = 1-10 points (verbalizing their encouragement i.e. yelling)
  • Physical support of team members = 1-10 points (helping team members with tasks to make it easier but not cheat)
The Strong(er) events where in order of completing them;
  • Farmers Walks = They have what's called Formers which are circular type steal plates that go from 25kg to a TON! We used 75kg for the big boys and 65kg for the smaller lads! Now let me tell you, the weight is not alot BUT the size of the "rings" are big and extremely awkward to carry!!

    Everyone gave it a nudge (couple put them in wheel barrows) & to my surprise everyone got them across the line & back.........just (I say suprise because I carried them & thought Holy shiz, I don't think I can carry it!!!!) Special mention must go to David who was the smallest guy and smashed everyone on time and ease.....very impressive!! Win to Team Meaner!

  • Sled Pulls = 20m Rope with 65kg of weight on a sled, pull that sucker as quickly as possible across the concrete then next team member did the exact same, until all team members had finished!! Team Mean had a shocka they only had 5 guys do it out of 6! So they "won" but we called it a draw!

  • Wheel Barrow Races = Wheel barrow to each team, they started with two 40kg cement bags in wheel barrow, they raced a zig zag course & picked up another 40kg cement bag at one end to repeat the zig zag coming home where they handed over to the next person in team to repeat the process!

    This was a funny event to watch & referee, they said this was the hardest due to fitness!! Broken cement bags everywhere with people taking the pi$ out of each other, it was fun and everyone was buggered afterwards!! Win to Team Mean

  • Lastly was good old fashioned TUG OF WAR!!
    Best out of 3......First one went to team Mean....then the smack talk started........2nd one went to Team Meaner.........then the smack talk got more........and it was all on for the 3rd and final tug of war...........go.........10sec team mean looked to have it in sync and in the bag.....15sec.....team meaner pull it back to the middle......20sec it's STILL EVEN......25sec.....team meaner start wearing down team mean.....30sec.....TIME! Win goes to Team Meaner.....was awesome the first 2 tug of wars where over in about 10sec due to team dominating the other....this 3rd and final was fitting to the day! 30sec of Tug of War and it was JUST won by Team Meaner!!
Final Points of the day taking into consideration of all factors? And the winner goes to...........................a DRAW with 110 each!!

The boys weren't happy about this they wanted a WINNER! So we did it the old fashioned way........choose 1 person from each team and sculling race! Ian bought it home for
Team Mean!

I have to say, I had a great time and so did the Humes Crew they are looking forward to the next one so they Team Meaner can get their revenge! For now though, Team Mean can bath in the feeling of success.......

Thanks to all of Humes Christchurch from Management to all the boys on the floor in having an open mind to "making it happen", it's not your 'normal' team building exercise BUT it's team building neither the less that suits these lads!!

I tried to video it but as it happens didn't work out....so sorry I don't have any footage of this in film or photo format because a picture captures a thousand words!

Here are a couple of pics of previous training sessions;

First EVER Strongman Competition...

I completed my First Strongman Competition and here are the results for that comp!

First, I have to say I enjoy the Strongman Medley (which I won) and I suck at RAW strength i.e. Log Press! However, regardless it's very clear that my weakness is "raw strength", yet my capacity to TRANSFER the "raw strength" I CURRENTLY have is exceptional!

Before you put me in the category of blow ass, look at the facts I provide below, got nothing to do with my ego and how great I am, more an observation of others raw strength vs my raw strength, and my functional strength vs others functional strength.....now if you follow that, lets look at facts!

Facts:

  • I've been training for marathon this year which I completed on May 31st i.e. Strength training was limited to hardly any!
  • I've been training strongman for about 4wks prior to this event
  • 2 guys are strength/power lifters, 1 guy works construction everyday
  • The smallest guy in our division 81kg (I reckon the scales where heavy 2kg) after the competition was FINISHED, attempted to lift the 126kg stone and GOT IT!!! That's huge pound for pound, yet in the log press sucked like me!
Which brings me back to "use able" or being able to transfer the "raw strength" you have into what you are trying to achieve, what I'm trying to say; just because you are gym strong doesn't make you real life strong, sure you have a platform for Real Life Strength but it doesn't give you automatic rights!!

Here's the video of the Medley;

Thanks to Eastside Strongman for organizing this event, it was a nice low key entry and fun as well (mostly). No matter where you go in life or what you do, you will always encounter Man and his EGO....the only thing that can change from that is HOW you deal with other people and there ego......I'm still maturing on that one :-)

Do you REALLY want to train like a Combat Warrior...

90% of men like the "idea" of training like a WARRIOR, I mean at it's purest it's very Alpha and from the outside looking in we as men love to see the "warrior" win and never give up!!

BUT the reality is........

Training like a Warrior is HARD in fact it's VERY f$#@!@# HARD.... and it's not for everyone and this is why when it's fight time at EHP, generally ONLY those that are in the ring are those that "cut it".....

I mean why would you put your body through hell if you don't have to hope in the ring after 6wks or more of hell!!??

So to all my "wanna be" UFC watching warriors out there who tell me how much they would love to train like a Demon and show the world how much "grrrrr" you got in your belly after watching the latest UFC.......

While I understand your "Grrrrr" from feeling all pumped up after seeing 2 men in the ring at battle, why don't you ask these Warriors if they like it when it's fight time?
